Sushi RokuBy Zabrina Rodriguez Rapozo
My husband and I visualized Hollywood stars or some of our city's movers and shakers sucking down expensive champagne or brightly colored drinks in this booth, now occupied by us and our 5 month old daughter. Having our baby with us is an important point, we were treated with every kindness as the wait staff happily accommodated us without the usual looks of annoyance some servers give when we arrive for our reservation with our little one in tow. So, happily sipping on our drinks we decided appetizers were in order as our little one had fallen asleep. Our server suggested the Rock Shrimp which arrived piping hot and coated in a delicious semi sweet citrusy sauce. Wow! This is probably one of the best appetizers I have ever had. The tempura batter stayed crisp and light and the sauce that clung to the tender shrimp was both addictive and satisfying.
Teriyaki Sea Bass was our next appetizer. The fish was extremely fresh and the sauce that coated it was accented with fresh ginger and aged soy sauce. Dining at a restaurant named "Sushi Roku" we could not pass the chance of ordering the crispy spicy tuna roll. Spicy without being cloyingly so and balanced perfectly with fresh tuna the roll offered all that was good about hot fried tempura and perfectly executed sushi. Our entrees of 8 hour braised pork and sea bass were equally satisfying. The tender pork was cloaked in a rich and flavorful liquid only a braise of many hours could produce. The warm spices were intoxicating in aroma and flavor. The sea bass was crusted in dried herbs and served on a bed of delicious rice. My only complaint would be the dried herbs that topped the delicate fish. Had they been fresh they may have had a less overpowering flavor.
Sushi Roku offers the best of the Strip at prices that are not too hard on your budget. Besides when you're splurging on amazing fish and fried ice cream at least you can leave with a happy belly when you head into the casino to empty your pockets. Open Sunday through Thursday 12:00pm-10:00pm and Friday & Saturday 12:00pm-11:30pm.
