Las Vegas Gambling Tips: Playing Internet Tournaments -- Overview

On The Town With Vegas Vic
By: Victor H. Royer

Welcome to Las Vegas! My name is Victor H. Royer, but everyone just calls me Vegas Vic. I was named after that famous neon sign in Downtown Las Vegas, that cowboy with the hat on top of the Pioneer Club, always waving his hand and beckoning to his long love, Sassy Sally, on the other side of the street. I will be writing a few articles for AccessVegas.com, so I hope you enjoy them.

Playing Internet Tournaments -- Overview

It is now time to discuss the phenomenon of the Internet poker revolution. I will discuss not only how to play and survive in Internet poker tournaments, but I will also use this opportunity to tell you a little bit about one of my favorite Internet poker sites, PartyPoker.com. One of the reasons I have selected this particular site as an example, is not only because they are the world's biggest Internet poker site, but because they offer such a great variety and selection of so many different tournaments and buy-ins. They also offers several of the games that are now mostly not offered in land-based poker tournaments.

Most of the poker tournaments that you will play either on the WPT or WSOP circuits will be Texas Hold'Em no limit tournaments, and very few -- if any -- of the remaining land-based brick-and-mortar casino or poker room type tournaments will offer any of the other games, such as Seven Card Stud, Stud/8, Omaha High, Omaha/8, as well as some of the other interesting poker games. But you can play games like this, and tournaments featuring these games, on the Internet, and I have chosen PartyPoker.com has an example because that's where you can find so many players participating in these tournaments that makes it worthwhile, definitely from the prize money perspective.

The Internet poker revolution has taken the world by storm, and has introduced the game of poker, and particularly Texas Hold'Em, to great new generations of computer savvy players. Furthermore, many young people have now grown up not only with computers and the Internet, but they have become introduced to the game of poker, and particular Texas Hold'Em, as something which is inherently part of their youth and growing up process. Many of these young adults have cut their teeth on Internet poker, and as soon as they reach legal gaming age for land-based casino poker rooms and card rooms, they very often make a great and noticeable impact, particularly on some of the major tournaments.

Sometimes the transition from the world of the Internet poker tournaments to the world of real world poker tournaments can be difficult, at least at the beginning. This is because Internet poker tournaments are so completely different to their land-based cousins that there is a substantial degree of adjustment necessary for anyone making this transition, particularly those who have learned to play first on the Internet. Similarly, those players who have experience in playing in land-based poker tournaments can find it equally as difficult to transition from their land-based experience to the world of Internet poker tournaments.

There are many reasons for this, most of which I have already discussed in my earlier poker books, in particular Powerful Profits from Internet Poker. For those discussions offered here in this book, I will concentrate more on some of the strategy aspects of playing Internet poker tournaments, as well as some of the recommendations and suggestions that I wish to share with you that might assist you with transitioning from land-based poker tournaments to the world of the Internet. The world of the Internet is usually divided into two types of poker tournaments, which are:

  • Multitable tournaments
  • Sit-n-Go tournaments

We will continue with this discussion in the next issue.
