Nevada Ballet Theatre's upcoming season will be complimented by other exciting endeavors such as the search for a new artistic director and preparing for a move into the new world-class Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
Barbre remarks, "As we prepare for the season ahead, our search committee continues to look for a permanent artistic director who possesses a strong vision of artistic excellence. This person will be a central component in leading us into the next phase of the company's growth - The Smith Center for the Performing Arts."
ABOUT THE 2008-2009 SEASON
Nevada Ballet Theatre's 2008-2009 Season opens in October with the magnificent classic full-length ballet, Giselle. A haunting story of a young peasant girl and the nobleman she adores, this worldwide favorite will be adorned by luscious sets and costumes. With a romantic score by Adolphe Adam and choreography after Corrali and Perrot, this tale of love and redemption lives in the repertoire of every major ballet company. The company's 2nd annual A Choreographers' Showcase in November is a unique collaboration of emerging artists, bringing together the best and brightest of Cirque du Soleil® and Nevada Ballet Theatre to share original choreography on the Mystère Theatre stage at Treasure Island.
Described as "A Project to Stimulate and Encourage Artistic Growth," this ambitious production will be offered over two weekends this year, with a special performance for 1,600 Clark County students, including those from Nevada Ballet Theatre's Education and Outreach program, Future Dance.
December brings one of Las Vegas' most popular holiday events – The Nutcracker. Always an audience favorite, equaling an anticipated sell-out, this familiar ballet features new surprises every year.
February will mark the company's second all-Balanchine production, a signal of the company's increasing skill. Entitled an All-Balanchine Program, it will feature three of "Mr. B's" master-works. Serenade, widely considered one of the most beautiful ballets, was created by Balanchine in 1937 for the first students of the School of American Ballet. Concerto Barocco, danced by the New York City Ballet for its inaugural performance in 1948, displays Balanchine's genius ability to transform dancers into perfect instruments and embodiment of the music. These works will be performed to the live accompaniment of the Las Vegas Philharmonic, an exciting addition that will complement Balanchine's splendid choreography. The company brings the program to a close with a reprise of the popular and upbeat Who Cares?, set to the music of George Gershwin.
The second repertory program of the season, American Masters, will be presented in April. Bringing back one of last season's highlights, the company will present Val Caniparoli's captivating Lambarena, set to African drums and the hymns of J.S. Bach. To add to this varied evening, audiences will be treated to the local premiere of Neon Glass Pas de Deux by Interim Artistic Director James Canfield.
The season finale will include New Works '09 – an array of newly commissioned pieces from some of today's most exciting choreographers. Best described as "new," "innovative" and "groundbreaking," this collection of new works will be accompanied by a world premiere ballet by James Canfield.
