Founded in Los Angeles in 1997, Flogging Molly got its name from a local bar named Molly Malone's where the band often played and built its original fan base. The septet's sound is a mix of traditional Irish music and punk rock using Celtic instruments like violin, mandolin and accordion blended flawlessly with grinding guitars and pounding drums. With a unique sound and a rapidly growing fan base, the band was soon signed to the record label, Side One Dummy.
In 2000, Flogging Molly released its Side One Dummy debut, Swagger, featuring songs such as, "The Likes of You Again" and "Black Friday Rule" along with the band's ode to hangovers, "The Worst Day Since Yesterday." The debut album sold more than 50,000 copies before the band headed back into the studio to record its 2002 follow-up, Drunken Lullabies. The sophomore effort included classics like, "Rebels of the Sacred Heart" and the woeful "The Son Never Shines (on Closed Doors)." 2004's Within a Mile of Home reached #20 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Billboard Top Independent Albums.
The band's latest album, Float, was recorded in Ireland and released in March 2008. More mature, yet containing the same blistering energy that marks all of the band's work; Float has received the largest audience acceptance of any Flogging Molly album. The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned the hit single, "Requiem for a Dying Song."
