Cornell first rose to fame in the 1980s as lead singer of Seattle-based Soundgarden, a band that was instrumental in leading the '90s "grunge revolution." After releasing multiple albums throughout the latter 1980s, Soundgarden released the double-platinum album Badmotorfinger in 1991, where his exhilarating vocals were finally heard by the masses. Around that same time, Cornell formed the band Temple of the Dog with fellow grunge rockers from the band that would become Pearl Jam, as a tribute to their friend Andrew Wood. Temple of the Dog released one album that went on to sell more than 1 million copies and included the hits "Hunger Strike" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven." Soundgarden continued to write and record music, releasing the hit album Superunknown in 1994 that went on to sell more than 7 million copies worldwide, earn two Grammy awards and included singles such as "Fell on Black Days," "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman." Soundgarden released its final album Down on the Upside, selling more than 1 million copies, in 1996. That following year, the band broke up due to internal tensions.

Cornell then went on to pursue a solo career, releasing the album Euphoria Morning in 1999, garnering a Grammy nomination for Best Male Vocals in 2000 for the single "Can't Change Me." In 2001, Cornell was approached by members from the band Rage Against the Machine, whose members were looking for a new vocalist. Joining the band now known as Audioslave, Cornell and his fellow band members released its eponymous debut album in 2002. Audioslave the album went on to reach triple platinum status with hits like "Cochise" and "Like a Stone," and the band began touring while, at the same time, working on its second album. In 2005, the band released Out of Exile, which debuted number one on the U.S. charts and released hit singles like "Be Yourself" and "Your Time has Come." The band continued touring and became the first American rock group to perform a free concert in Cuba for an audience of more than 70,000. The band released its third and final album Revelations just a year later. In early 2007, Cornell announced that he was leaving Audioslave to pursue a solo career once again.

During his final year with Audioslave, Cornell released the single "You Know My Name" for the 2006 James Bond film "Casino Royale." The single went on to become the first song he recorded for his second solo album that he released in June 2007 with the name Carry On. The album debuted at number 17 on the U.S. Billboard chart and includes songs "No Such Thing," "Arms Around Your Love" and a soulful rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean."
