In what may become a career defining fight for a pair of top young prospects, Zeferino Entertainment and the Tropicana Las Vegas will host an interesting moment in history when Marvin Cordova and Carlos De Leon Jr. headline an exciting card on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m..
"This fight card will give boxing fans all over the world the opportunity to see two of the best young prospects in the world in their toughest fights to date,"commented promoter Zef Ramirez.
The main event features undefeated welterweight prospect Marvin Cordova (19-0-1, 11 KO's) in a major step up in class as he takes on fellow prospect Derrick Samuels (15-3-1, 4 KO's). Cordova is looking to crack in the world rankings, and he knows that a dominant win over Samuels could do the trick. But Samuels, who is coming in on a six fight win streak, is looking to use a win over Cordova to establish himself as a world ranked contender in his own right.
"I think this will be a great opportunity for Marvin to establish himself in front of a major audience, but I know that Derrick is a tough fighter, and he certainly has what it takes to win this fight as well," said Ramirez.
In the co-main event super middleweight contender Carlos De Leon Jr. (20-2-2, 13 KO's), fresh off his win over Buddy McGirt Jr., is taking on another tough fellow prospect when he squares off against Ohio's Dallas Vargas (21-4, 15 KO's) in an eight round fight. De Leon, who scored a knockout over McGirt on Showtime, is looking score a second win over a fellow Showtime alum in Vargas. Dallas, who like McGirt and De Leon, comes from a boxing pedigree, also brings an interesting personal story, establishing himself as the most noteworthy deaf fighter in recent boxing history. However, with a pair of losses in his last two fights, there is no question that he is in a must win situation.
"I know he is a very tough fighter," commented De Leon , "he hits very hard, but I trained very hard for this fight and I am confident that I will win."
Most insiders are predicting an exciting brawl; both Vargas and De Leon are exceptional punchers with exciting styles that promise to have fans on their seats.
Rounding off the card is an exciting cruiserweight fight featuring highly regarded prospect Aaron Williams (17-1-1, 12 KO's) looks to get back on the winning track after suffering his first loss as he takes on tough Colorado brawler Ayo Fadeyi (10-6-1, 6 KO's). Fadeyi briefly flirted with prospect status several years ago but inactivity has derailed his career. However, most insiders feel that Fadeyi is a fighter with above average power and legitimate talent, a combination that could prove problematic for the prospect Williams.
Also on the card, super bantamweight contender Torrence Daniels (10-4-1, 4 KO's) looks to rebound after a disappointing loss in an NABF title fight earlier this year as he steps in against tough brawler Vernie Torres (27-12, 15 KO's) in a six round fight. The title fight loss was a setback for Daniels, but he realizes that a win over Torres could open up some doors for him and possibly position him for one more run at a title fight.
Light Heavyweight prospect Akinyemi Laleye (9-1, 4 KO's) looks to continue his winning ways against rugged journeyman Isaiah Henderson (11-9, 4 KO's) in a four round fight, and in an interesting welterweight fight streaking Geoffery Spruiell (7-5, 2 KO's) looks to avenge a loss against Las Vegas prospect Ryan Ellul (4-1, 1 KO) in a six round fight for ticket information go to www.tropicanalv.com.
