The Las Vegas Art Museum (LVAM) is pleased to present an exhibition featuring recent works by British-based artist Paul Morrison, which will be on view from February 2 through April 27, 2008. The artist's Las Vegas debut will include a large site specific wall painting, entitled Phytochrome, in the LVAM Main Gallery, and six paintings and works on paper in the Polis-Carver Gallery. The LVAM Members' Preview will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008 from 6-8 pm. Prior to the Preview, Paul Morrison will present a showing of his recent films from 4-6 pm, free admission.

Paul Morrison is noted for his distinctive, black and white graphic-style compositions, which feature a pastiche of discrete, highly stylized representational forms that appear derived from disparate graphic genres. Drawing inspiration for his motifs from sources that range from popular cartoons to botanical drawings to Renaissance woodcuts, and often maintaining incongruous scale, Morrison unifies his compositions with artificial spatial configurations that nevertheless intimate perspectival recession.

Born in 1966 in Liverpool, England, Morrison received a B.F.A. from Sheffield City Polytechnic in 1988, and an M.F.A. from Goldsmith's College of Art, London, in 1998. His work has been presented at Harvard University's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Cambridge; The Drawing Center, New York; ICA, London; MUHKA, Antwerp; Kunsthalle Nürnberg, Germany; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and other art institutions. He is represented by Alison Jacques Gallery, London, and Cheim & Reid, New York.

The exhibition is organized for LVAM by LVAM director Libby Lumpkin. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full-color, illustrated exhibition catalog, which includes an essay by Los Angeles art critic Christopher Miles. The catalog will be published after the opening of the exhibition to include images of the Morrison's site specific wall painting Phytochrome at LVAM.

The exhibition is made possible by LVAM's Joyce Mack Exhibitions Fund and James and Michelle Zeiter Exhibitions Fund. Additional support is provided by Alison Jacques Gallery, London, and Cheim & Reid, New York.

The Las Vegas Art Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and is closed Mondays. General admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 55 years and older, and $3 for students 13 years and older; children 12 and younger enter free when accompanied by an adult. For more information on exhibitions, membership, and education programs, please call (702) 360-8000, or visit www.lvam.org.
