Reception for exhibit during First Friday at Government Center


"Art of the Hopi," an exhibit from Clark County Museum with the museum's staff as curators, is shown Feb. 25 through April 11 at the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery, 500 Grand Central Parkway. The exhibit will be celebrated with First Friday receptions from 6 to 8 p.m. in the rotunda March 7 and April 4.


Hopi wicker and coiled baskets, hand-formed pottery, katsina dolls carved from cottonwood roots, overlay jewelry and weavings make up the exhibit. Most of the work has been created by the Hopi for hundreds of years, while their distinct silver jewelry had its beginnings in the 20th Century.


The Hopi live in villages in Northeast Arizona, mainly on three mesas where they have lived and kept close ties to their cultural traditions and languages for centuries. There is no specific word in the Hopi language that means "art." To the artisans, their creations are simply part of everyday life and tradition.
