How To Dress In Las Vegas
Do I Have To Dress Up In Las Vegas?
Generally speaking, no. Many visitors wear the same thing they would wear to go shopping on Saturday afternoon at home. Shorts and a t-shirt in the summer, jeans in the winter. As long as you are reasonably clean and presentable you will be fine.
Note: Las Vegas isn't hot all year long. Check out are Las Vegas Weather FAQ page to find out what to expect during your visit.
Many veteran Las Vegas visitors like to brag about how little they pack because they pack just the basics. However, if you plan to do fine dining, attend a nightclub or upscale lounge, or go to a high-end show you may wish to bring along some nicer clothes. Here are the exceptions:
Fine Dining
A handful of top restaurants do have a dress code (usually resort casual meaning Dockers or similar type pant/slacks, a shirt with a collar, and non-tennis shoes minimum) and a couple of truly top end establishments ask men to wear a jacket. If you aren't sure if you will make the grade, you may wish to call ahead to the restaurant when you arrive but as a rule, leave the jacket at home unless you usually wear one.
Nightclubs and Lounges
Most of the nightclubs have dress codes. Can you get in wearing shorts, Nike's, and a golf shirt? Maybe. Depends on the club but they might let it fly if it is slow or the club is on the casual side. However, you will probably feel out of place.
If you regularly attend nightclubs, you probably dress to impress so you'll be all set. For men, look sharp. A shirt with a collar or a jacket won't hurt. For the ladies, you can't dress too sexy for the clubs here as long as it is fashionable.
Hotel lounges with the free, live entertainment are much more laid back and generally have no dress code. However, you will feel out of place in a top-notch hotel lounge if dressed like you are doing your grocery shopping, and they reserve the right to enforce a dress code.
Las Vegas Shows
You'll see plenty of jeans and t-shirts at shows anymore. The days of the Rat Pack are gone, and visitors often dress for comfort. However, you'll feel a little out of place at a Cirque du Soleil show unless you step it up a notch.
Bottom line: This is Las Vegas! Live it up and dress it up a little in the evening. If you are married, put some romantic spice into things for that special night out by looking sharp. If you are single and looking, look good so you'll be looked at.
Important note: You do a lot more walking in Las Vegas than you will probably do anywhere else. This is not the place to break in a new pair of shoes. Bring comfortable footwear.
